How long is the track maintenance period?

From Monday, 25 June 2018 to Sunday, 19 August 2018, inclusive.

Why is the track being overhauled?

The railway between Stockholm Central and Stockholm Södra is one of the most trafficked routes in Sweden. Any disruption on this route impacts all train traffic south of Stockholm. The Swedish Rail Traffic Administration is therefore overhauling the route to reduce the risk of future disruptions and thereby ensure reliable and sustainable train traffic.

Read more about the track maintenance on the Swedish Transport Administration's website (Swedish only).

Why is the track maintenance period in the middle of summer?

Most track maintenance work is scheduled for weekends and the summer period to inconvenience your everyday life as little as possible. Schools are closed and many are away from work during the summer. This makes it easier for the Swedish Transport Administration to shut down the railway for a single period rather than several shorter periods. Which means the work can be carried out more swiftly.

Which trains are affected?

All trains on these routes are affected:

  • Stockholm–Göteborg/Uddevalla
  • Stockholm–Karlstad–Oslo
  • Stockholm–Malmö–Copenhagen
  • Gävle–Stockholm–Linköping
  • Stockholm–Eskilstuna–Örebro
  • Stockholm–Katrineholm–Hallsberg
  • Stockholm–Nyköping–Norrköping

How are the trains affected?

High-speed trains* will stop and depart from Stockholm Södra instead of Stockholm Central. InterCity and regional trains will stop and depart from Flemingsberg station instead of Stockholm Central.

Night trains will stop and depart from Flemingsberg station between 14 July and 5 August. During the rest of the track maintenance period (25 June – 13 July and 6 – 19 August) night trains will take a different route, via Västerås, and can therefore depart and stop at Stockholm Central as usual.

*High-speed trains on the route Stockholm–Karlstad–Oslo will stop and depart from Flemingsberg station instead of Stockholm Central. During parts of the track maintenance period the trains will take a different route, via Västerås, and can therefore depart and stop at Stockholm Central as usual.

How long will train traffic be affected?

Are north-bound trains affected?

Read about other planned track maintenance which will affect traffic in the northern part of Sweden here.

How early do I need to arrive at the station?

As always, we recommend that you arrive at the station in good time for the departure. This also applies to passengers travelling from Stockholm Södra or Flemingsberg.

Remember that both stations are smaller than Stockholm Central and that there is not enough room for everyone to wait on the platforms. We therefore request that passengers do not go down to the platform until approx. 10 minutes before departure.

How long does it take to change between SJ trains and commuter trains?

If you have bought your entire journey (including the SL ticket) through us, we have taken the layover in consideration and given you enough time to make your connection. During parts of the track maintenance period, night trains to/from Malmö and trains to/from Karlstad and Oslo will be able to depart and arrive at Stockholm Central as usual.
