SJ works daily to reduce its environmental footprint. This work involves everything from choosing eco-labelled electricity to sorting waste at source onboard.
All trains operated by SJ are electrically powered. As SJ only buys renewable electricity from hydroelectric and wind-powered sources for its trains, the production of electricity for the trains causes minimal emissions. For example, on a per person basis, carbon dioxide emissions during a journey between Stockholm and Göteborg correspond to the emissions from three millilitres of petrol.
All journeys on SJ’s electric trains comply with the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation’s Good Environmental Choice criteria – the world’s toughest eco-labelling system.
This doesn’t mean that rail traffic leaves no environmental footprint. Train maintenance, procurement and the bistro goods all effect the environment - which is why we are constantly working to reduce our environmental impact.
